Amy D. Herman este inițiatoarea acestui proiect inedit, intitulat „Underneath We Are Women”.

"Ask yourself, how much time per day you spend focusing on self-doubt or negative thoughts? Now imagine what could be achieved if all those negative thoughts became positive. Imagine all the things we could achieve if we focused that same time and energy into things we loved rather than on hating our bodies and minds. Imagine how much fun we could have, no matter the present state of our bodies." This is Sam. She was one of the very first women I photographed. Her confidence and energy is contagious. She's body proud. She's loud. She's confident. She has also recently lost a substantial amount of weight. But I'm not here to focus on just that. I want to talk about something that Sam has so perfectly demonstrated… She has remained confident, proud and positive toward the appearance of her body through her entire journey. Before during and present, she has continued to admire what her body was capable of. She never missed an event, chose not to wear 'that perfect dress', apply for the new job, talk to that sexy guy… She didn't stop living simply because her body wasn't quite what she wanted. She had goals, but she also had a life and she lived it!! She lived it and still does no matter what her body looks like! THIS is what this project is about! Loving yourself at EVERY stage in your journey. "It’s time to stop perceiving a woman’s confidence as arrogance and disguising self-depreciation as some type of modesty. This is about embracing our own journey and respecting another’s journey too. It’s about acknowledging where we are in our present journey and still choosing to love ourselves regardless. How long will you wait until you start living your life? How many goals will you set yourself before you choose to embrace your present self? This project has been created to show people that we can start loving ourselves now. We don’t need to wait anymore." And Sam, she's the living proof! #bodypositive #loveyourselffirst #trustyourjourney #bodyproud #womenunite #women #underneathwearewomen #strong #determined
"Perceived sexualisation is a learned perspective". We do not all need to view the body in a way that is considered sexual. It is absolutely possible to teach our children and each other that our bodies can be seen in many other lights… Children are born with the ability to view the world from a very unique perspective. They are free of prejudice and harmful judgement of others. They have a natural curiosity which is something that should be nurtured not discouraged. Many of you will know that I work as a visual artist, often working with my own body as the subject matter… So yesterday, when my three year old asked if she could photograph me, of course I said yes. I asked her what she wanted me to do. She told me to take off my robe and stand over by the wall. She climbed up on the bed to get some height and I handed her my rather cumbersome DSLR camera. She clumsily fumbled around until she managed to get a good grip on it and bring it up high enough to look through the viewfinder. I asked her how she wanted me to stand. She quickly went into 'director' mode, giving me various directions and movements to make with my body. "Tip your head a little." "Put your arms up." "Stay theeeeeere." She informed me when we had finished and looked at me and very confidently said "yep, good. Well done Mama." The interesting thing to me was that the intention was never about aesthetics for my daughter. The process wasn't even about the end result, it was simply about watching the movements that my body was able to make. It became about functionality not appearance. This seemingly simple encounter has certainly given me a lot to ponder on in regards to what can be learnt from our children, not what we can teach them! #underneathiam #learning #bodypositive #daughter #artist #photography #underneathwearewomen #mother #loveyourself #bodydiversity #picoftheday #art #artoftheday #freethenipple
"After I had my surgery I was never really self conscious of the scar, it was just a reminder of what I had been through… I don't want it to fade… I always want this reminder of how amazing my body and mind really are." – Underneath I AM ADAPTABLE – What an incredible woman. We photographed this very special lady over the weekend in Melbourne. Proof that the shyest of introverts can throw themselves into the most confronting of experiences and come out the other end feeling totally empowered and accomplished. I love the way in which Sarah has completely embraced her newly formed exterior embellishment that runs almost the entire length of her abdomen. Her attitude toward what the body is capable of rather than the aesthetic byproduct of major surgery is perfect! On a personal level, this woman is a complete superhero in my eyes. Not only was she incredibly nervous, she also had her three young children with her on the day of the shoot, and STILL managed to keep her cool the entire time and long enough to end up with this final shot that perfectly encompasses her chosen word – ADAPTABLE. What a perfect role-model she is for her children. They must be three of the most blessed children to have a mother like you Sarah. #rolemodel #mothers #bodiesareamazing #underneathiam #underneathwearewomen #adaptable #coolcalmandcollected #bodypositive #bodylove #whatcanyourbodyaccomplish
Active & healthy bodies are diverse bodies. Active & healthy lifestyles are equally as diverse. Three women, three different bodies and three very different journeys. There are many many different ways to live an active and healthy lifestyle. These three women have found a style that best suits their own lifestyle. @kangatraining.danica @findingfiforme @taniadaltonpt all live a very different active lifestyle. They all also have one other thing in common. They use exercise as a way to FEEL good. Exercise for health and wellbeing is often put second to the physical changes your body can achieve through exercise and heathy eating. Your wellbeing and health (how you FEEL) should always be at the forefront of your goals. The physical changes are simply the byproduct. And THIS is the life these women are living, an active lifestyle because it makes them FEEL good. It makes them FEEL energised, powerful, strong, focused, calm, determined…. Check out these incredible women and what they do! They truly are an inspiration and I am thrilled to have them on board for this project! @findingfiforme @taniadaltonpt @kangatraining.danica #health #wellbeing #feel #bodypositive #diversity #effyourbeautystandards #photography #melbourne #motivation
Never ever underestimate the power of the simple things in life… A smile, an honest compliment, a touch, a kind word… These are the little things that can change someone's day or save a life! Take a moment to really think about this guys, who would you rather be? The person that saved a life? Or the person that ended one? Sure, you might think this is a tad extreme, but let me tell you, the online world today is absolutely rife with hatred towards one another. And what's worse, it can be so easily changed. But that starts with you. The change must begin with you! Who do YOU want to be? "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive." – @dalailama spoke these words and they are 100% truth. How can we expect to move forward as a society if we're all to busy hating on each other! Your judgement of others is only ever a reflection of your own self, NOT the person your directing your hate toward. So perhaps it's time to take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself "who do I want to be..?" #compassion #love #dalailama #truehappinesscomesfromwithin #underneathIAM #compassionate #compassionateliving #loveyourself #selflove #like4like #women #melbourne #instalove #makethemnotice #makeachange
Fun-loving FUN! A few people have asked why I chose to photograph women in their underwear to help promote body positivity. Fair question… Other than the obvious fact that I wanted to showcase the diversity of a woman's body beneath her clothing, there's quite a few reasons I came to this decision. – We rarely see what lies beneath a woman's clothing, UNLESS she fits into the social standards of what society has dubbed as 'acceptable'. –When we DO see skin of a woman that is outside of these 'accepted' standards it is never in a positive light. Let me give you an example, –You're flipping through a women's magazine and you see a whole lot of size 6-10 female models, mostly in their early 20's, un-scarred, able-bodied etc ect… Now don't get me wrong, these women look great! They do. They have this confidence, a sass a type of happiness about them. But then you get to the back of the magazine, you know, where all those little advertisements are? The advertisements that showcase an array of women with wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks and acne. Now do the women in these images ever look happy? Nope. They look miserable! But hang on.. That's only in the 'before' image. In their 'after' image they look much happier. Now these women seem to be exuding the same confidence as the women in the front of the magazine… This is my problem! The only time we ever see a woman with these kinds of markings or scarring on her skin, is in the miserable 'before' pictures, in an advertisement telling us that when we 'fix' or 'rid' ourselves of these things we'll magically be happy! Well I say fuck that! Let's teach ourselves to love what we have. Teach ourselves to love the 'before' even if we're still aiming for the 'after'! And this is why I've asked women to wear nothing but their underwear! To see their skin. To show people and ourselves that it's actually possible to have the same confidence and happiness as the women in the magazines present, no matter your appearance. ✌ #underneathwearewomen #havefun #givenofucks #peace #bodypositive #funatanyage #strong #funloving #ihaveembraced #effyourbeautystandards #determined #stopthehate #selflove
